I remember the first time that I heard the demo of SonReal's new single "My Friend". We always knew how eclectic an artist and songwriter SonReal was, but this was different. He had exchanged his trademark quirky rhymes and playful production for something completely stripped down. The first few guitar strums immediately grabbed my attention. What followed was a simple, folk-inspired song for and about his late father who passed away in 2015. Through the first verse the hair stood up on the back of my neck; through the second verse I fought back tears, unsuccessfully. I lost my own father seven years ago, and it really hit home. But the part that impressed me the most about this song is it's universality. The song resonates from so many different perspectives, not just for those who have lost parents, but those who are parents, who have parents, who miss parents.
Give this track a spin. It's one of the most special tracks I've ever had the pleasure of being involved with. Thanks to Zane Lowe and the team at Beats1 for premiering the song yesterday. You can check it out now on your preferred streaming service here.
